News for the week of 05-Jan-2009

by Carol Banks Weber

2009 looks to be a big yawner for some fans and a riveting improvement for others, like those loving Bianca, Ryan, Greenlee, Zach and Kendall. Everybody else serves as mere window dressing. Kendall comes out of her coma a different, sharper-edged individual. She may not take too kindly to Bianca once again acting in a self-serving manner by helping herself to Zach’s sperm. Couples Bianca and Reese, and Greenlee and Ryan, would like the new year to signify true love and wedded bliss. But that won’t happen. They may try for a double wedding, but a death could put a downer on the proceedings. Erica’s dusted off as an anvil for Reese and Greenlee. Dr. Sinclair figures significantly in Annie’s and some other characters’ well-being. Angie pulls something illegal, forcing Jesse to go cop on her. And Amanda has to deal with an even more harrowing dilemma. That general enough for ya?

While musing about her love for New Year’s Eve parties and champagne, and more champagne, Chrishell Stause (Amanda) let slip a story of when she was at Alicia Minshew’s (Kendall) pad partying last year and inadvertently bumped a candle over onto the bed trying to locate her purse. She’d had a few to drink and barely remembered the incident, until someone else regaled her the next day. The drinking and the hangovers have become such an annual event for Stause that she’s up on her remedies, such as Drinking Mate tablets found at your nearest pharmacy.

Stause looks forward to the March 9th ABC Daytime Salutes Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS 5th anniversary performance. Not just because it benefits a charity dear to her heart or because she gets to perform with her friends from ABC Daytime. No, this year is special ‘cause she won’t have to starve herself to fit into these skimpy outfits (last year, she and several of her AMC babe-mates dolled up for a rendition of “Moulin Rouge”). She’ll be doing a duet with Ricky Paull Goldin (Jake). The performances take place in New York City’s Town Hall.

Crazy world. Vincent Irizarry (David) and Billy Miller’s (ex-Richie) paths crossed in reverse. Irizarry left Y&R to resume work back on AMC, and Miller left AMC to start a new gig on Y&R. The two actors met for the first time (although Irizarry knew of Miller’s AMC work by having watched him haunt Annie) at Y&R studios when Irizarry headed over there to give back a borrowed guitar to Thad Luckinbill (J.T., Y&R) and Miller was getting ready to go on as the recast Billy. Then, Irizarry arrived at AMC to inherit Miller’s old dressing room, which was his old dressing room from before.

Jeff Branson (ex-Jonathan) may have had to endure his share of character-istic storms on AMC as Ryan’s violent brother trying to turn hero, but once GL’s people got a hold of the talented, March 10th-born actor, all that was done with. Brandon is happy to declare that he’s really being used to his full capacity and that his GL character, Shayne Lewis—enjoying a sizzling pairing with Gina Tognoni (Dinah, GL; ex- Kelly, OLTL)—is a joy to play. Despite only effusive praise for his time on previous soap AMC, Branson couldn’t help but touch on differences. “I wanted somebody to give a shit about the story being told, and that involves coming in a little bit earlier, doing your homework the night before, having an opinion about your character and the story, and not just taking whatever’s on the page and doing it because you’re told to,” he said. Co-starring opposite double-Emmy winner Tognoni isn’t exactly chopped liver either. “Gina’s been in this game a long time and has already accomplished so much, but she cares like it’s her first day, cares about every scene that comes up. That blows my hair back. It inspires me to no end.”

Having played Ryan’s troubled younger brother Jonathan on AMC garnered Branson critical acclaim nonetheless, and a firm friendship that’s as brotherly as two unrelated guys can get. Branson remembers the lengths to which Cameron Mathison (Ryan) went to make the newcomer comfortable and command his own space. The first scene required Branson to go off on a lengthy monologue, but nerves were on edge and the tension from the crew was obvious. Mathison saved the day by encouraging them to ease up and let Branson find his own way, sure that he would.

Gossip for the week of 05-Jan-2009

Greenlee will take a fatal plunge off the edge of a cliff—the same cliff Leo took his fatal plunge off of. That’s how Rebecca Budig as the original Greenlee will exit the show this time, kicking off February Sweeps. It’s doubtful Leo’s Josh Duhamel can reprise the role for Budig’s exit, considering he’s about to become a married man to rap R&B artist Fergie.
